The
Institute of Contemporary Art held an open house today, which served as
the grand opening of their new gallery at 100 Northern Av., in Boston,
on the site of Fan Pier, beside Anthony's Pier 4 and the U.S.
Courthouse. This was the first new art museum built in this city in
nearly 100 years.
Crowds began gathering at the ICA before 9 A.M., when the museum opened. By 10 A.M., the wait to get inside the ICA had grown to between 30-45 minutes, as staff held the line from going in after the museum was filled to capacity. Museum staff were estimating capacity crowds today, and this appeared to be generally the case. Initially, crowds were confused when they got into the wrong line to get in this morning; museum staff allowed them to enter first, as they had been among the first to arrive at the staging tent set up for the event. The crowds admired the permanent exhibitions, as well as the visiting exhibitions, which consisted of both digital and traditional photographs, oil painting, and computer-based art, created on photographic software. Other exhibits included a lounge chair...made incorrugated metal of the same type used on stairs. While photography was prohibited in the galleries and of the artwork itself, you can see a sample of what was on exhibit here. Several media outlets covered the opening, including NECN and CW56. top
