New England Press
Price: $5.95 for the e-book (Microsoft Reader format); $6.95 in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format; $7.95 for the CD-ROM version. This e-book has links to a number
of important websites that contain scholarship offers (something a
regular paper book could never offer!!), as long as your computer has a
live Internet connection. This e-book cuts right to the chase, so you
don't have to spend valuable time looking at websites that might be
irrelevant to you, the college student or parent searching for college
scholarships for your son or daughter. Also includes a section on what
to beware of in selecting scholarships; because of the increasing
number of scholarship scams surfacing over the Internet (see the Federal Trade Commission's website for
more details.), it is important to know what to look for and not be the
victim of a scholarship scam. This book can also be purchased on CD-ROM
at Amazon.com top Other useful links to e-books E-books.com The University of Virginia Electronic Text Center. (these books are also free!) |
Home of the E-bookIn Memoriam: Born: November 24, 1965 Died: November 20, 2005, at the public market at Cabuyao, Laguna. About New England PressThe New England Press was founded on Feburary 12, 2004, by Mark Murphy, with the ultimate aim of selling the author's work at a competitive price. It was started as a one-man operation, to produce and distribute e-books written by the founder. It is one of the smallest printing presses around, thanks to specialized software that can produce an e-book with a few clicks. The entire printing mechanism of New England Press resides on a laptop computer that can go with me on demand—and one that is fortified enough so that any potential would-be thief would have to go through a lot of trouble to get access to. This is also a home-based business, a detail that should be kept in mind when viewing my business certificate. It's put out there to satisfy you, the potential consumer, that my business is legitimate and registered with the proper authorities, and not as an invitation to stop by when the fancy strikes you. Privacy is golden...yes?!It was during
a trip to the Boston Public Library that the idea for New England Press
took hold. The discovery of free e-book software that could
produce a complete, attractive e-book proved half of the inspiration
for beginning the business. The rest of the inspiration and knowledge
needed to start came from the Self-Publishing
Manual, by Dan Poynter; if not for that book, I would never had
gotten the idea of how to apply for a block of ISBN numbers. It was the
type of business I could do with a relatively low cost. Not quite
no-cost, but the next best thing. It appealed to the one thing I had
wanted to do since the 1980s: Publish a book. Now...the chance has
come. Our focus is on non-fiction that will be useful to the discerning reader. For the time being, the New England Press manufactures and distributes e-books exclusively, both through this website, and through Amazon.com. The e-book is a relatively new idea, and it promises to revolutionize how we think about books and what is possible with them. The e-book is an exceedingly powerful format, that can contain pictures and sound, as well as words. Moreover, an e-book can provide links to other websites on the World Wide Web—a detail that promises to change forever the way authors approach nonfiction. We are excited to be on the cutting edge of the publishing revolution, a revolution headed by intrepid authors like us, who realize that we can do away with the publisher and do the work of writing and publishing without them. The New England Press embodies part of the American Dream: the part that drives a percentage of Americans to form and run their own business. And the best part about this is, it is the type of business can be within the reach of almost anyone. Anyone who can write can do this! For the time being, the New England Press is not accepting outside manuscripts for publication, because of the legal issues involved (you have to deal with the matter of contracts, and potential legal liability. I'd have to carry insurance to adequately deal with the risks involved.). One day in the future, this might change. Our philosophy is simple: Provide high-quality e-books at a price below comparable paper books, and to provide e-books that the blind and other physically challenged individuals can easily use. Toward that end, our e-books are unencrypted. We believe that educating the reading public is the best way to preserve the idea of copyright, both here in the U.S. and throughout the world. The other alternative is to produce e-books that cannot be used as the reader sees fit, on whatever computer he or she might have at their disposal. The idea makes the founder squemish. But in order to continue to offer e-books in that manner, it relies on you, the reader, not making copies to give away to your friends and others. top
