How to block inappropriate content using Internet Explorer 7.0 and
FireFox.

We at New England Press are committed to a free Internet, and the free exchange of ideas. Here...not all of our content is appropriate for children. This website has therefore been labeled in conjunction with ICRA criteria, and can be access restricted. That is, children can be prevented from seeing the racier and more objectionable sections of New England Press. Here's how to do it:

In Internet Explorer 7.0

  • Select tools, then Internet options from the drop-down window by clicking on the left mouse key.
  • Select content advisor by clicking with the left mouse key. In the Content Advisor section, click Enable.
  • Select Ratings. You should then see ICRA 3. To then see and set the ratings for each category, click on the category. To set whether or not it can then be seen, slide the slider by point and left-clicking the mouse.
  • Under the General tab, various options can then be set, including password protection and whether to allow viewing of websites that have no ratings imbedded in their websites. A word of advice here...a lot of website do not have ICRA or other ratings imbedded in their web pages. If you leave the option "users can see websites that have no rating" unchecked, it will not allow viewing of any website that does not contain some sort of rating information imbedded in them.

For Firefox:

  • There is no internal means by which to block objectionable websites via Firefox. You must use third-party software to block objectionable content. Click here from some solutions and software that can be used. Or see the following websites for their content filtering software:
    NetNanny
    SafeEyes.
    CyberSitter.

  • Another free solution also mentioned is to use your router, if you have one attached to your network. If you have broadband, it is possible to utilize one; if you use printers that are network-capable, you almost certainly have to use a router, as the modem your company supplies you with will have only one jack for your computer. Most routers on the market can filter web content based upon keywords. For New England Press, use the keywords "erotica." The main idea is to open the router's control page by typing 192.168.1.1., the default router access, in your web browser. See your router's user guide for more details; usually, the guide will be in a PDF file on the CD that came with your router. They have a web-style interface, and to set the options, you use the same web techniques that are familiar to you when surfing the 'Net. It is easy...I swear!
